A Man-Boy’s Guide to Wedding Derailment

11/26/2018

GIBSONS, BC, CANADA (11/26/18) – Can one man divert disaster by revisiting the couples from all the weddings he’s attended? Bernard Kirby thinks so, and he’s made a list to win back the love of his life, Stephanie Hansen, before she marries his former best friend.

Catch Our Drift Productions new release, 17 Weddings, crosses many genres—a delightful combination of romantic comedy, literary, contemporary, and new adult fiction.

In his second novel, Mark Cameron presents a polarizing protagonist—a man-boy who is both lovable and loathable as he grapples with the failure of his fairy-tale marriage. “I’m not entirely sure where Bernard Kirby came from,” Cameron says. “His struggle to embrace adulthood was fun to write, and it also caused me to reflect on deeper issues. Despite its humorous veneer, 17 Weddings is a layered exploration of relationships—between lovers, family and friends.”

Terry Fallis—two-time winner of the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour—calls 17 Weddings “a wild ride infused with humour and heart.  A moving story about love and regret and friendship.”

Will Bernard succeed, or will his plan self-destruct?

17 Weddings can be purchased in paperback and e-book formats through Amazon, Chapters Indigo, Barnes & Noble, Apple iBooks, and other online retailers.

Mark Cameron is a Canadian author based in Gibsons, BC. His debut novel, Goodnight Sunshine (2015), was longlisted for the inaugural Whistler Independent Book Awards. Visit Mark’s blog at www.markofwords.com.

Local Supernova Shines Bright

3/8/2017

GIBSONS, BC, CANADA (03/08/17) – What is that bright light out there? Oh, it’s you! It’s me. It’s all of us. We all have the potential to shine brighter than we believe we can. It was this premise that inspired local author, Sheila Cameron, to write a non-fiction collection of stories called Shine Bright: Live A Supernova Life.

“I’ve always wanted to write, but I was hesitating,” says Cameron. “Then my husband handed me a quote about ‘shining like the freaking supernova you were meant to be’ and that inspired me to go ahead and share my stories. Sharing our stories is powerful. It builds connection and offers comfort and inspiration to others.”

The stories in Shine Bright offer an extraordinary glimpse into an ordinary life while showing how even small steps can add up to make a difference. Themes in the work include parenting, environment, food and community. Cameron often questions the status quo and considers how our choices affect ourselves and others.

Shine Bright is presented in sections that parallel a human life with the creation of a supernova in space. “This metaphor was perfect for exploring how we each have the means to break ourselves down, build ourselves up, and create a lasting impact in our world,” Cameron says.

Cameron will read from the book and lead a discussion about related themes at the Gibsons Public Library on Saturday, March 18 at 2 PM. She will also join local authors, Heather Conn and Claire Finlayson, for an evening of non-fiction readings at the Sechelt Public Library on Thursday, March 30 at 7pm.

Shine Bright: Live A Supernova Life, a non-fiction work published by Catch Our Drift Productions, will be available mid-March at Talewind Books in Sechelt, WOW! Art Café in Gibsons, and Earth Fair Books in Madeira Park.

UPDATE (May 5, 2017): Due to a lack of submissions, we are deferring the 39 Signs of Hope project for now. We may revisit the project in the future. Thanks to all those who submitted writing -- we were inspired by all the applications we received.

The deadline for writers to submit to 39 Signs of Hope has been extended to April 15, 2017.

39 Signs of Hope, to be published in the fall of 2017, is a collection of non-fiction stories from writers around the world. Whether facing personal challenges, trying to combat environmental threats or dealing with global unrest, people rely on hope to help them through difficult situations.

Each selected author will make a financial contribution of $300 (Canadian funds) toward production costs in exchange for having their work professionally edited and designed. They will also receive 20 trade paperback copies with an option to buy additional books at a wholesale price.

Catch Our Drift Productions is accepting non-fiction story submissions (1,000 to 2,000 words) until April 15, 2017. There is no fee to submit a story. For more information, visit www.catchourdrift.ca/39-signs-of-hope.

Catch Our Drift Announces Compilation

10/1/2016

Catch Our Drift Productions is producing a compilation of short stories that aims to make a difference in the lives of readers ... and writers.

39 Signs of Hope, coming in the fall of 2017, is a collection of stories from writers around the world. Whether facing personal challenges, trying to combat environmental threats or dealing with global unrest, people rely on hope to help them through difficult situations.

"So many writers have compelling stories," says Sheila Cameron, co-founder of Catch Our Drift Productions. "By sharing those stories, contributing writers will offer solace and comfort to readers seeking a greater sense of hope or purpose in their lives."

39 Signs of Hope will be published under a hybrid publishing model, wherein the publisher and selected authors will share in both the cost of production and the opportunity to sell books. "Many writers don't have the experience or means to publish their stories," says Mark Cameron, also a co-founder. "Similarly, small-scale publishers have limited resources for working with multiple authors and reaching readers. This new model is a win-win plan to fill a gap between independent authors and publishers, who are both working with small budgets."

Each selected author will make a financial contribution toward production costs in exchange for having their work professionally edited and designed. They will also receive 20 trade paperback copies with an option to buy additional books at a wholesale price. Catch Our Drift Productions will contribute 39% of profit from e-book and print-on-demand sales from 39 Signs of Hope to a registered charity that is voted on by contributing authors.

Catch Our Drift Productions is accepting submissions (1,000 to 2,000 words) until January 31, 2017. There is no fee to submit a story. For more information, visit www.catchourdrift.ca/39-signs-of-hope.

30 Days of Sunshine 2016 BC Book Tour

5/3/2016

Press Kit available here...

GIBSONS, BC, CANADA (05/03/2016) – Sunshine Coast author Mark Cameron is loading up the family camper van for 30 Days of Sunshine, his inaugural BC Book Tour. This promotional tour for Cameron’s debut novel, Goodnight Sunshine, will have his family of four exploring the southern half of British Columbia in their 19-foot camper van, stopping along the way to engage with readers at a variety of libraries, farmers’ markets and bookstores. The tour will include over 25 stops on a path spanning more than 4200 km.

Cameron aims to build relationships with readers, librarians and booksellers around the province—in person. “As an author, I spend much of my time writing in isolation,” he says. “I don’t want to spend the rest of my time in isolation, promoting myself online.” Cameron’s partner is a freelance editor, and their two children also enjoy writing and reading. “We want to reach out to as much of the literary community in BC as we can by dropping in to introduce ourselves in person.”

The tour has expanded and will take closer to 40 days to complete, but the family hopes that at least 30 of those days will hold sunshine—both inside and outside of their vehicle. “I am thrilled about showing our kids more of the beautiful province we live in, but I know this trip will be both rewarding and challenging,” says Cameron. “On one hand, we’re travelling in luxury—with a bathroom and kitchen. But when the weather forces us inside, it’s harder for everyone to maintain a sunny attitude.” Since 2010, the Cameron family has spent the equivalent of two full years in their tiny home on wheels.

All events are free and open to the public. The tour kicks off in Cameron’s home town, Gibsons, on June 1st.

Other cities and towns currently booked on the tour include: North Vancouver, Grand Forks, Salmo, Trail, Nelson, Creston, Cranbrook, Golden, Revelstoke, Salmon Arm, Sorrento, Kelowna, Merritt, Kamloops, Cache Creek, 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, Prince George, Burns Lake, Terrace, Prince Rupert, Courtenay, Tofino, Nanaimo and Victoria.

Goodnight Sunshine is the fictional story of Oliver Bruce—a disenchanted family man drawn to Ecuador seeking an invention that could transform the global energy landscape. Published by Catch Our Drift Productions, the novel was released in November, 2015. The e-book release will coincide with the launch of the summer tour.

Mark Cameron is an avid traveler, entrepreneur, husband, and father of two unschooled children. Follow the touring family’s adventures on Twitter and Facebook @markofwords or go to www.markofwords.com to connect with Mark.

Sunshine Coast Writer Debuts Novel on Mid-life Awakening

11/26/2015

GIBSONS, BC, CANADA (11/26/15) – It started with a seed of an idea for one Sunshine Coast resident. What if there was a solution to our insatiable appetite for energy—the opportunity for a world no longer dependent on fossil fuels? What would we do with it?

Goodnight Sunshine is the story of Oliver Bruce—a disenchanted middle-aged family man who finds a message about a potentially world-changing invention, leading him to the jungles of Ecuador to seek its existence. During his travels, Oliver comes face-to-face with his own moral compass.

Mark Cameron weaves a satisfying plot around a very human story, told against a backdrop of colorful characters and exotic locations.

“I started with a plot concept and a handful of familiar landscapes,” says Cameron, “but the characters soon took over. It was powerful and liberating to let a number of different personalities run free in my head. I just had to get out of their way and submit myself to the journey.”

Cameron’s debut novel was inspired by his desire for a simpler existence. When he gave up the conventional life for one of exploration, he had no idea what to expect. In 2010, he loaded his family into a camper van and drove across the United States, a voyage that led him to Ecuador—twice. The novel is based on some of what Cameron learned along the way.

“It’s the story of one man’s mid-life awakening, and in many ways it reflects my own path toward greater consciousness,” Cameron adds.

Goodnight Sunshine, a novel published by Catch Our Drift Productions, was released on November 26, 2015. Cameron will be reading at the Gibsons Public Library on Saturday, December 5 at 2 PM, and is planning a British Columbia book tour in June, 2016.

Energy Crisis Solution in the Pocket of One Man

11/5/2015

GIBSONS, BC, CANADA (11/05/15) – People around the globe are tapping into their collective creativity to discover a future that stretches beyond fossil fuels.  It is a future that is more vibrant, abundant, resilient – peaceful.

That future fits easily into Oliver Bruce’s pocket. What will he do with it?

Goodnight Sunshine is the story of a disenchanted middle-aged family man who finds an intriguing message about a potentially world-changing invention, leading him to the jungles of Ecuador to seek its existence.

Author Mark Cameron gave up the conventional life for one of exploration. He left his software start-up and loaded his family into a camper van to lead a simpler life—a life that led him on a journey across the United States, and eventually to Ecuador. Now, in his debut novel, Cameron taps into that experience as he speculates on what could happen if a solution to the world’s energy needs fell into the right—or wrong—pocket.

“This is the story of one man’s mid-life awakening,” says Cameron. “In many ways it reflects my own path toward consciousness, though Oliver’s journey takes place over a much shorter timeframe, and with a lot more at stake than my own. The novel covers territory that is familiar to me—both geographically and personally—while exploring potential outcomes that are well beyond the scope of personal experience.”

Goodnight Sunshine is scheduled to be released on November 26, 2015. Cameron will be reading from his novel at the Gibsons Public Library on Saturday, December 5 at 2 PM, and is planning a BC book tour in June, 2016.
